Circular demo buildings

Two real-scale buildings have been designed as demonstration projects to showcase their potential impact for circularity and sustainability

A full cycle of construction, renovation and partial deconstruction will be implemented, and excess components will be reused or recycled in commercial projects. In the demo sites, the project aims to achieve:

  • A use of maximum 50% virgin content in buildings
  • 80% of reusable/recyclable content
  • 100% locally available content
  • 0% waste intensity during construction
  • A material-to-surface ratio which is better or equal to comparable buildings

Two construction philosophies to be validated and compared

The two demos will adopt an open-source and multifunctional design approach as most of the components will be replaceable and upgradeable to facilitate repair, reuse, and substitution.

The demos will be initially constructed with the available resources and then upgraded with the new materials and components. These will be replaceable and upgradeable to facilitate repair, reuse, and substitution.

Each version of the demos produced during this iterative process will be fully digitized and recorded in RECONSTRUCT´s 6D-BIM allowing the comparison of cost, circularity, material efficiency and operational energy efficiency between the two buildings and between their different versions.
