Hydrogel: The next-generation solution for lithium-ion battery fires

Hydrogel is being used as a revolutionary technology to achieve superior fire-extinguishing effectiveness without PFAS chemistry.

The global energy transition has led to an enormous increase in the use of lithium-ion batteries. These batteries have become part of everyday life – at home, at work, and across countless industries.

However, their widespread use also brings significantly higher fire risks. Lithium-ion batteries can ignite spontaneously without an external trigger, and such fires can develop rapidly and unpredictably.

In these situations, the ability to extinguish burning batteries quickly and effectively is vital, and that is exactly what Hydrogel is designed to do.

Superior performance: Engineered for lithium-ion battery fires

Hydrogel represents a next-generation fire-suppression medium specifically developed for lithium-ion battery incidents. It combines:

  • High thermal stability
  • PFAS-free chemistry
  • Exceptional cooling efficiency

Its unique thermoresponsive gel-based structure adheres to battery surfaces, accelerating heat extraction and helping prevent re-ignition or thermal runaway escalation.

Hydrogel is also suitable for extinguishing Class A, B, and F fires, making it a versatile and powerful all-in-one extinguishing solution.

Hydrogel offers a more sustainable and higher-performing alternative to traditional foams or water-heavy suppression agents – reducing runoff and environmental impact while delivering excellent extinguishing results for:

  • Electric vehicles (EVs, E-bikes)
  • Stationary energy storage systems (ESS)
  • Battery production and recycling operations
  • Industrial environments with high battery usage

The safest fire-extinguishing agent in the world

Safe for the environment

  • ZERO PFAS content
  • Proven non-toxic for the environment
  • Fully recyclable

Safe for humans

  • Does not decompose into hazardous substances, unlike many conventional extinguishing agents
  • Non-hazardous to users and does not cause skin irritation
  • Despite being over 95% water, Hydrogel can be safely used on electrical equipment up to 1000 V when applied with suitable nozzle configurations

Practical use and application

  • Premix formulation (ready to use): Hydrogel is supplied as a fully premixed extinguishing agent, requiring no dilution or on-site preparation.
  • Temperature requirement: It can only be applied at ambient temperatures above 0°C.

Production and supply

Hydrogel is produced in the Netherlands under strict quality-control standards.

We supply Hydrogel in:

  • 1000-litre IBCs
  • 300-litre IBCs
  • 25-litre jerrycans

This allows flexible use across industrial, professional, and OEM applications.

Certified performance: KIWA NTA 8133

Two years ago, we committed to validating Hydrogel’s lithium-ion fire-extinguishing performance using the KIWA NTA 8133 certification—the most rigorous and objective testing protocol for lithium-ion battery fire extinguishers.

Because the NTA 8133 certifies both the extinguishing agent and the hardware, we pursued full system certification. Today, the following Hydrogel-based extinguishers are NTA 8133 certified:

  • 6-litre constant-pressure Hydrogel extinguisher
  • 9-litre constant-pressure Hydrogel extinguisher
  • 6-liter CO₂-piston Hydrogel extinguisher

The NTA 8133 standard was developed in the Netherlands at the instruction of the Dutch government to assess extinguisher effectiveness against lithium-ion battery fires independently. This NTA 8133 protocol will become the new European Norm EN 3-11 in early 2026.
