NORIT activated carbon for PFAS removal
Activated carbon treatment is generally recognised as the most mature and most widely adopted treatment technology for PFAS removal. Just as activated carbon has been used for decades to remove various organic pollutants from water streams, such as pesticides and taste and odour-causing compounds, keeping drinking water safe, it is also effective in removing PFAS from water streams. In fact, activated carbon has been removing PFAS from water streams for decades.
NORIT carbons have consistently demonstrated high removal efficiencies for PFAS, both with powdered activated carbon (PAC) and with granular activated carbon (GAC). Several third-party studies confirmed the superior PFAS adsorption properties of our carbons.
Water matrices vary from waterwork to waterwork, from groundwater to surface water and from wastewater to drinking water. With the changing water matrix, the choice of carbon will also change, to achieve the best possible performance depending on the conditions at hand. NORIT reactivation of spent GAC leads to PFAS destruction
Offering a full portfolio of products and services to the water industries, NORIT operates a network of reactivation plants where spent GAC can be reactivated and subsequently reused. In a recent study, NORIT demonstrated the destruction of PFAS during the reactivation process, freeing the carbon completely of adsorbed PFAS, restoring the PFAS adsorption capacity and subsequently destroying the PFAS for 99.98% in the reactivation kiln and afterburner. This means that GAC treatment is not only a means to remove PFAS from water streams but also leads to the near full destruction of PFAS, highlighting the suitability of the technology to deal with the PFAS challenge, and making an end to ‘forever chemicals’.
Current R&D efforts are aimed at further improving our grades for PFAS adsorption, including better removal of the shorter chain PFAS types, and demonstrating performance at various water matrices.
