Step by step production of unique bioactive proteins
Our unique commercial-scale production system is rooted in deep-science insights developed with academic partners. In simple terms, each protein is produced through the following steps:
- We provide the genetic information of human milk proteins to our good microorganisms
- We develop proprietary strains that can produce and secrete high yields of our proteins
- We supply our strains with water, sugar, and other nutrients in a bioreactor tank, which allows them to produce an abundance of our proteins under the right operating conditions
- We harvest our pure proteins and then supply them to our commercial partners globally
A minimal, sustainable production process
Currently, most of the bioactive proteins used commercially are obtained by extremely unsustainable extractive processes that use cow milk as their raw material. For instance, to produce one gram (1g) of cow lactoferrin (cLF), the existing manufacturing plants will require over 50 litres of milk, generating large amounts of greenhouse gases as well as salt water wastestreams that need to be further treated before disposal.
In contrast, PFx Biotech’s proprietary manufacturing platform is highly efficient with minimal use of land, energy and raw materials. Furthermore, the final protein products are structurally and functionally identical to proteins found in breast milk. Our human milk protein ingredients are:
