Verralize’s New portable sensor technology and PFAS test kit accurately detects ‘forever chemicals’ at 4 ppt in minutes, not weeks.
Verralize has developed a breakthrough portable PFAS detection system that brings laboratory-comparable PFAS screening directly to the field. Using proprietary nanocarbon-based electrochemical biosensors, the system detects PFAS compounds at concentrations as low as 4 parts per trillion in just 12-15 minutes, enabling immediate operational decisions without the weeks typically required for laboratory analysis.
The PFAS detection challenge
Current PFAS analysis relies on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), requiring sophisticated laboratory infrastructure and complex sample preparation. While LC-MS provides definitive results, the process typically takes days to weeks, with costs on average ranging from $300-$500 per sample.
These limitations create an urgent need for field-deployable screening tools that provide actionable data in real time while maintaining sensitivity appropriate for regulatory thresholds – now as low as 4 ppt for certain compounds.
Innovative sensor technology
At the heart of Verralize’s PFAS detection system is a multiplexed array of nanocarbon-based sensors functionalised with proprietary ligands that selectively bind to specific PFAS molecules. When PFAS molecules bind to these ligands, they induce measurable changes in electrical conductivity that are processed through proprietary algorithms and translated into concentration values.
The complete system comprises a reusable analyser (approximately the size of a medium coffee thermos), disposable sample cups, and sensing lids containing the nanosensor array – ensuring measurement consistency while preventing cross-contamination.
Real-world performance
The technology has undergone extensive internal validation with approximately 2,000 samples processed to date. Results demonstrate consistent detection capability at 4 ppt for routine field use, with laboratory demonstrations achieving sensitivity down to 1.5 ppt.
A significant field validation case study with BioLargo launching January 2026 in Lake Stockholm, New Jersey, which will further demonstrate the technology’s performance in real-world conditions.
Strategic partnership
Verralize has established a strategic partnership with BioLargo, a leader in innovative water treatment technologies and developer of the Aqueous Electrostatic Concentrator for PFAS removal.
“Rapid, on-site PFAS detection is transformative for the PFAS treatment market,” states Tonya Chandler, President of BioLargo Equipment Solutions & Technologies.
“Verralize’s kit combines simplicity, affordability, and the ability to differentiate PFAS compounds, proving invaluable for our clients. As we integrate detection and treatment, real-time analytics fundamentally improves decision speed and outcomes.”
Market impact
The addressable market for field-deployable PFAS detection exceeds $500 million annually. Verralize’s technology represents a disruptive advancement, offering:
- Speed: 12-15 minutes versus days/weeks for laboratory testing
- Sensitivity: Detection at regulatory-relevant levels (4 ppt routine)
- Cost-effectiveness: 50-60% lower cost per test compared to laboratory methods
- Portability: Field-deployable system requiring no laboratory infrastructure
With EPA’s new drinking water standards targeting PFOA and PFOS at 4 ppt, demand for rapid, cost-effective testing solutions is accelerating. Verralize is positioned to address this need with the commercialisation of our first PFAS field test kit for drinking water on track for market launch in Q1 2026.
Applications across water management
The portable PFAS detection system addresses multiple critical applications:
- Municipal water monitoring: Rapid screening of drinking water systems
- Remediation management: Real-time breakthrough monitoring and treatment verification
- Industrial compliance: Pre-discharge screening and process control
- Emergency response: Immediate assessment following suspected releases
- Community outreach: On-site testing for private wells and public water systems
The technology is particularly valuable where waiting days for laboratory results would delay critical operational decisions or public health interventions.
