UK Government pledges £300m boost for offshore wind industry

The UK Government has announced a £300m investment to strengthen domestic supply chains for offshore wind.

Delivered through Great British Energy, this funding aims to spark billions in additional private investment, revitalise industrial heartlands, and support thousands of skilled jobs nationwide.

Offshore wind engineers, welders, and technicians stand to benefit from this early-release funding package, unveiled ahead of the Comprehensive Spending Review.

The initiative supports manufacturing for key offshore wind components, such as floating platforms and subsea cables, aligning with the UK’s broader Industrial Strategy to drive economic growth and resilience.

Commenting on the fiscal backing, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: “Delivering the Plan for Change means winning the race for the clean energy jobs of the future, which will drive growth and help us reach clean power by 2030.

“That is why I am bringing forward much-needed investment in our domestic offshore wind supply chains, strengthening our security and creating good jobs for our welders, electricians, and engineers.

“Let my message to the world go out: come and build the clean energy future in Britain.”

Why offshore wind is a strategic national priority

Offshore wind is not just a clean energy source – it’s a cornerstone of Britain’s future economic and energy security. With some of the world’s best wind resources and a long coastline, the UK has a natural advantage.

Capitalising on this means lower energy bills, reduced dependence on imported fossil fuels, and long-term job creation in coastal and industrial communities.

Developing strong domestic supply chains will ensure that British citizens feel the economic benefits of offshore wind. It will also protect the UK from global supply shocks and secure leadership in a fast-growing global market.

Deputy CEO of RenewableUK, Jane Cooper, said: “There’s a huge opportunity for the UK to secure thousands of new jobs and supply chain investment in the sector, which will make our homegrown energy supply even more secure.

“The Prime Minister’s funding will be critical to ensuring the UK grasps the industrial opportunities in the offshore wind supply chain at a time of intense global competition for clean energy investment.

“By nurturing existing UK companies and ensuring we’re a competitive location for international investors, there’s an opportunity to triple our manufacturing capacity over the next decade, adding £25bn to the UK economy and creating an additional 10,000 jobs in the supply chain.”

Building a homegrown clean energy future

This investment is part of a wider £8.3bn commitment to Great British Energy over the current parliamentary term.

It allows domestic companies to apply for grants that demonstrate long-term potential to grow the UK’s clean energy supply chain.

The initiative complements the £43bn in private funding already pledged to UK clean energy projects since July, underscoring the government’s strategy to crowd in private capital.

The business secretary and energy leaders will convene in London this week for a high-profile Future of Energy Security summit, co-hosted by the International Energy Agency.

The event signals the UK’s intention to lead global clean energy cooperation at a time when geopolitical tensions are reshaping the world’s energy landscape.

Dan McGrail, interim CEO of Great British Energy, added: “Great British Energy will help the UK win the global race for clean energy jobs and growth by investing in homegrown supply chains and ensuring key infrastructure parts are made here in Britain.

“We will work closely with businesses across the clean energy sector to get funding out as fast as possible and get projects off the ground.”

A new industrial vision for the UK

Prime Minister Starmer has called for a “muscular” industrial strategy to adapt to a new era of global uncertainty.

Investing in offshore wind is central to this vision, ensuring the UK’s clean energy infrastructure is not only resilient but proudly made in Britain.

With this latest move, the UK is staking its claim as a global clean energy powerhouse.
