Bioforcetech achieves major breakthrough in PFAS removal

Bioforcetech, a leading environmental technology company based in the Bay Area, has reached a significant milestone in PFAS removal.

Independent testing confirms that its advanced Sigma Pyrolysis system eliminates 99.98% of PFAS compounds across all waste streams, including biosolids, discharge water, and exhaust gases.

This achievement marks the most comprehensive validation of the system’s performance to date.

Extensive testing confirms high efficiency

The rigorous study, conducted by engineering experts at Brown and Caldwell, involved sampling at eight points throughout the Bioforcetech process.

Results revealed that the thermal oxidizer, located before the exhaust scrubbing stage, is where the majority of PFAS destruction occurs. This highlights the system’s carefully optimised design and operating conditions as key to achieving near-complete removal.

The testing builds on previous evaluations, including internal assessments by Bioforcetech and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) studies.

Advanced analytical methods were used for each phase of the process: EPA 1633A for solids, OTM 45 for exhaust gases, and high-sensitivity tests conducted in partnership with North Carolina State University.

The combined results confirmed that just 0.02% of PFAS compounds remain anywhere in the system, demonstrating unprecedented effectiveness in removing these persistent chemicals.

Transforming waste into value

Beyond PFAS elimination, Bioforcetech’s pyrolysis process converts treated biosolids into a sustainable, value-added product called OurCarbon®.

Testing verified that all PFAS originally present in both wet and dry biosolids are fully removed from this end product.

This dual benefit – creating PFAS-free outputs while generating a usable carbon material – positions Bioforcetech’s technology as a game-changer for wastewater treatment facilities seeking environmentally responsible solutions.

Dario Presezzi, CEO of Bioforcetech, added: “This milestone further drives the proof that pyrolysis of biosolids is a clear solution for the PFAS problem.

“The results from this testing give Bioforcetech even further confidence in our thermal process to alleviate wastewater plants of their biosolids burden and produce a value-added output product.”

A new standard in wastewater management

Bioforcetech’s success with PFAS removal offers a promising pathway for municipalities and industrial facilities struggling with the environmental and regulatory challenges of PFAS contamination.

The combination of thermal treatment and sustainable resource creation demonstrates that it is possible to protect water and air quality while producing valuable byproducts.

As PFAS continues to threaten communities worldwide, innovations like Bioforcetech’s pyrolysis system are paving the way for safer, more sustainable, and circular approaches to managing biosolids and other waste streams.
