Thermo Fisher Scientific has unveiled the Orbitrap Exploris™ EFOX Mass Detector, the first high-resolution accurate mass (HRAM) Orbitrap system engineered specifically for food safety testing and environmental analysis.
Designed to tackle global contamination challenges, the new platform enables laboratories to identify and quantify pollutants like PFAS, pesticides, and other emerging toxins with unprecedented precision.
As food and water safety concerns escalate worldwide, the Orbitrap Exploris EFOX empowers testing facilities to produce faster, richer data – helping scientists assess health risks earlier and with greater confidence.
Lidija Raicevic, vice president and environmental and food safety lead at Thermo Fisher Scientific, explained: “As environmental and food safety laboratories face mounting pressure to deliver faster, more accurate results under tight budgets and stringent regulatory requirements, the Orbitrap Exploris EFOX significantly lightens the workload for PFAS, pesticides, and other contaminant testing.
“Offering an easy-to-use high-resolution mass detector helps ensure more labs can conduct critical full-scan, accurate mass high-resolution data monitoring, provide local testing across more areas of concern, and ultimately accelerate quality controls to make our environment and food safer.”
Purpose-built for routine workflows
Unlike traditional high-resolution systems adapted from research applications, the Orbitrap Exploris EFOX is purpose-built for everyday laboratory use.

It combines research-grade performance with simple operation, allowing users to move from sample to result within minutes while maintaining exceptional data quality.
Powered by Orbitrap technology, long recognised for its role in proteomics and small molecule analysis, the system delivers ultra-sensitive detection of trace contaminants such as PFAS.
Its streamlined, automated workflows reduce complexity and operational overhead, making high-level testing accessible to more laboratories.
Raising standards in environmental and food analysis
The new Orbitrap Exploris EFOX captures comprehensive, full-scan high-resolution data from every sample, enabling retrospective analysis without the need for reinjection.
This feature allows labs to easily identify newly recognised compounds and stay compliant with evolving global regulations.
Preconfigured workflows for key contaminants eliminate months of method development, helping labs achieve compliance faster and reduce costs.
Integration with the Chromeleon™ Chromatography Data System (CDS) offers an intuitive interface for simplified data processing and reporting, minimising training time and accelerating result delivery.
Supporting broader testing capabilities
Thermo Fisher also continues to advance its triple quadrupole solutions with the TSQ Altis™ Plus EFOX MS, a complementary platform optimised for environmental and food testing.
Together, these innovations mark a significant leap forward in food safety testing, setting a new benchmark for speed, precision, and data integrity in contaminant detection.
