Stellantis and Ample strike deal for cutting-edge EV battery swapping technology

Stellantis and Ample have signed a partnership that will see the industry-leading automotive company utilise Ample’s modular EV battery swapping technology.

Under the binding agreement, the two partners will collaborate to integrate Ample’s modular battery swapping technology into Stellantis’ EVs.

The groundbreaking EV battery swapping technology enables motorists who stop at a station to change out their depleted battery for a fully charged one in less than five minutes.

The programme will begin in Madrid in 2024 using a fleet of 100 Fiat 500es within Stellantis’ Free2move car-sharing service.

This model is Stellantis’ best-selling EV globally and particularly in European markets.

Both companies are also working at expanding the use of the modular battery swapping technology across other Stellantis platforms and geographies.

Speaking on the partnership, Ricardo Stamatti, Stellantis Senior Vice President, said: “The partnership with Ample is another example of how Stellantis is exploring all avenues that enable freedom of mobility for our electric vehicle customers.

“In addition to other projects we are focused on, Ample’s Modular Battery Swapping solution has the opportunity to offer our customers greater energy efficiency, outstanding performance and lower range anxiety. We are looking forward to executing the initial programme with our stellar Fiat 500e.”

One of the primary concerns among motorists looking to make the switch to an EV is the time it takes to recharge.

Ample’s batteries provide a rapid alternative to the EV refuelling experience that is as convenient as the traditional refuelling of ICE-powered vehicles – but green.

The company’s EV battery swapping solution is a drop-in replacement for the vehicle’s original battery.

These batteries can fit into any EV, meaning Stellantis can integrate them across the company’s EV portfolio without reengineering their models.

A rapid recharging solution

Ample’s modular battery swapping solution is engineered for speed and affordability, aiming to significantly cut downtime for electric vehicles and mitigate associated financial strains.

By offering Ample’s battery technology through a subscription service, EV customers can lower the initial vehicle cost and continuously access the latest battery advancements, enhancing the EV’s range and longevity.

Khaled Hassounah, CEO of Ample, added: “At Ample, we believe in the importance of making electric vehicles accessible to everyone without compromises, which is the only way that we will make a significant impact on lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

“Stellantis’ ambitious electrification goals, its range of electric vehicles, and the commitment of its leadership make Stellantis a perfect partner in achieving our goals.

“The combination of offering compelling electric vehicles that can also receive a full charge in less than five minutes will help remove the remaining impediments to electric vehicle adoption. We look forward to working with Stellantis to deploy our joint solution across communities around the world.”

Increasing accessibility for customers

To make accessing this technology as seamless as possible, Ample’s quick-deploying, lightweight battery swapping stations can be installed in public spaces within three days, enabling an expandable infrastructure to accommodate drivers’ needs.

As an Ample-equipped electric vehicle approaches the station, it’s promptly identified. Upon parking, the driver can initiate a battery swap through the mobile app, achieving a fully charged battery in under five minutes.
